In October 1989, Charles Stuart called 911 from Mission Hill in Boston. He said a Black gunman had shot him and his pregnant wife, Carol. The lie tore through the city: a police crackdown on Mission Hill, a media frenzy, and wounds in Boston's Black community that never fully healed.
Jason Hehir (The Last Dance) directed the three part series for HBO. It revisits the case, the institutions that failed, and what it still costs the people closest to it. It premiered on HBO and Max on December 4, 2023.
I was a director of photography, camera operator, and gimbal operator on the series, filming across Greater Boston. We shot where it happened, with people for whom 1989 is not history. The job was mostly staying out of the way: light the interview so the person forgets the camera, hold one look across three episodes, and never make a heavy room heavier.
I live and work in Boston. This is one of the hardest stories the city has, and I helped film it at home.
I shoot documentary interviews around Boston as a DP or camera operator. Send me the dates, the place, and what you're making.
