Gaffer·Lighting Designer
Welcome To Fenway Park, for the Boston Red Sox with Above Summit
Welcome To Fenway Park is an FPV drone fly‑through of Fenway Park, made for Red Sox Opening Day 2022. We filmed it at Above Summit and the Boston Red Sox produced and edited it, and I was gaffer and lighting designer through four days of planning and filming at the park. The finished piece runs just over three minutes. Above Summit is the Somerville production studio where I worked as senior video editor, camera operator and gaffer.
Lighting Fenway was mostly a speed problem. We needed an extremely wide field of view for the shots, so in most of them there was nowhere to hide a light.
We leaned on the park’s own practicals and turned on the stadium lights in the morning for a glow. Then we added units where the camera needed help: for the fly‑through of the scoreboard, for extra beams, and in the clubhouse and on the walk out to the field to balance exposure.
It was three long days, most of them starting before sunrise and running late. There was a lot of cueing, and a lot of running around putting out fires.
When the lens sees almost everything, lighting turns into a planning job. You figure out what’s already in the frame, what you can switch on, and where an added light can hide. If your location has to look good in every direction, I can light it. There’s more on my work as a Boston camera operator, gaffer and DP, and my photographs of the ballpark are in Dreaming of Fenway Park.
If you’ve got a stadium, a venue or a wide moving shot to light, I’ll start with what the place already has and hide added units where I can. Tell me about the location and I’ll put a plan together.
